Incepted by young Tokyo-based artist Hitomi Sato, Sense of Field is an installation made of common materials such as film and LED lighting. Sato has filled two ends of a room with thousands of transparent light films, leaving only a narrow passageway for the viewer.

Navigating through the narrow passageway, the viewer’s body inevitably comes into contact with the light films or ‘lighting hair’, causing the installation to move and scintillate, creating a shimmering light effect. The illusion alters when the installation is touched and viewed from different angles and locations.

Sato’s inspiration is derived from pure and fleeting visions of nature caused by natural light, such as sparkling ripples on water surfaces; sunlight that shines through the leaves of trees; or peeking rays from a break in the clouds.

The artist sought to cloak the human body with light shimmers to resonate one’s internal and external world. “Keep looking for a while, and the inner memories of our body are recalled,” says Sato.

Sato is a graduate from Musashino Art University Department of Architecture and Department of Science of Design.
