Sounds of sustainability: Carbon neutral certified acoustic panels

The commercial market has grown, and with it have grown concerns about sustainability related to the sourcing and production of building materials and acoustic products. As more and more building owners strive for environmentally friendly and healthy building interiors, Woven Image has taken a leading role in delivering design-led sustainable acoustic solutions with their EchoPanel® acoustic panel.

Released in 2004 as a demonstration of Woven Image’s dedication to product stewardship, EchoPanel® is a responsible solution for dematerialisation and waste reduction in commercial interior design. EchoPanel® achieves Global GreenTag™ (GreenRate level A), with the maximum Product Health Declaration™ Platinum Health. It is also Red List Free, publishing ingredient transparency with Declare while boasting low VOC emissions.

In addition, the EchoPanel® Environmental Product Declaration is recognised by International Green Building Tools including BREEAM®, LEED®, GreenStar® and WELL™.

However, every product produces an impact. Those activities that cannot be eliminated are offset by carbon credit procurement, supporting projects that aim to reduce and remove emissions, to balance EchoPanel®’s carbon emissions status from cradle-to-gate, including international distribution. Through such efforts, EchoPanel® has achieved carbon neutrality as of 2023, as certified by Climate Active. One of the most rigorous certifications in the world, Climate Active is an Australian Government backed voluntary initiative, providing partners a transparent and science-based method to measure, reduce and offset carbon emissions.

When a product is certified as carbon neutral, it indicates that steps have been taken to offset the amount of carbon it releases into the atmosphere over the course of its lifecycle. Woven Image achieved this, in part, by tripling their solar production, drastically reducing their dependence on fossil-fuel derived grid energy.  Furthermore, their tree planting commitments with Greenfleet have seen the equivalent of 10,099 trees and shrubs established since 2017 through donations, offsetting 4750.49 tonnes CO2-eq.

Woven Image has also purchased and retired carbon credits for South Pole projects to offset the EchoPanel® carbon inventory as part of the Climate Active Product certification process. South Pole projects involve restoration, protection, conservation, management of local ecosystems, upholding local community rights and working to support emission reductions through clean energy in nature-based projects worldwide. Each carbon credit is measured and defined under internationally recognised carbon standards and also has a unique serial number to prevent double counting.

The Climate Active certification covers all 7mm, 12mm and 24mm EchoPanel® acoustic panels including 12mm and 24mm precision cut designs.

EchoPanel® is suitable for a range of commercial interior applications, including walls, workstation screens, space dividers and Array ceiling baffles. Furthering their sustainability credentials, EchoPanel® acoustic wall panels are made of 100% PET, of which a minimum 60% is post-consumer plastics.

Through their ability to absorb sound and refined aesthetics, EchoPanel® precision cut designs provide occupants with acoustic comfort, visual appeal, and engaging texture in the interiors of workplaces, schools, and hotels. Latitude, Meridian, and Longitude’s v-groove cut patterns are similar to wood paneling. Art deco themes and the rise and fall of sound waves, respectively, are the inspiration for the curved linework displayed by Palace and Ohm. To add subtle elegance, Empire acoustic panels skillfully combine arches and vertical linework.

Woven Image continues to extend the EchoPanel® colour palette based on the latest design trends. New colours include pastels Butter and Mint, earthy tones of Cayenne and Nutmeg and the ethereal sunset, Dusk, all of which help designers create warm, welcoming interiors that support occupant wellness.
