Maxdesign – Appia Work

Appia Work is a new addition to the Appia family, which was originally created by Swiss-Brazilian designer Christoph Jenni in 2013. The simple design is presented in full-colour variants, with the die-cast aluminium structure coloured as per the seat. Compared to the ‘classic’ Appia, the new Appia Work features a single seat-and-back element covered in leather or fabric, with and without armrests, and it is available with two different bases.

Brunner – Cellular
Designed by Brunner, 2016

Versatility and connectedness were emphasised at Brunner’s impressive stand, with products that addressed the changing spatial situations of today’s offices and the shifts that occur between individual work and teamwork. Cellular is an adaptable modular office system that can adapt to changing requirements. Screens, low tables, high tables and various seats can be combined to create retreats or collaboration zones. Media and hardware can be integrated into the desks.

Flötotto – PRO Tablar

PRO Tablar combines the iconic Grcic-designed PRO chair with an oval writing board that swivels to allow optimal clearance for sitting down and standing up. The swivel-board remains true to the original idea of offering functionality in a simple and intuitive way. At Orgatec, Flötotto also presented an upholstery textile collection curated by Grcic, which can be used to create fully upholstered versions of all PRO Chair, PRO Armchair and PRO Stool designs for the first time. Additionally, new tables designed by Grcic were presented.

Zeitraum – Rail

After introducing Rail at IMM Cologne 2016, Zeitraum presented a greatly expanded product family during Orgatec. The modular solid-wood table range can be used in diverse environments. The range of tables owes its name to its specially developed T-profiles that are reminiscent of railway tracks. Rail features a patented connection between table leg and tabletop. Tabletop and legs are fastened with a quick-release clamp, and a continuous groove on the underside of the tabletops allows the trestles to be moved as required.

Tom Dixon – Boom

Tom Dixon’s visually arresting stand reflected his experience in designing hotels, restaurants, clubs and homes, and in so doing, referenced the newly blurred distinctions between work, home and entertainment spaces. The new Boom task light for wall and table was inspired by generations of draughtsmen’s and machinists’ lamps. The form is reduced to a series of cylinders, tubes and junctions. Dixon calls it the ultimate understated lighting option for a multitude of interiors.

ThinkingWorks – ThinkingQuietly Workstation

The new ThinkingQuietly range of acoustic furniture was developed in consultation with acoustic engineers. The range consists of workstations, work bays, and an overhead ‘cone of silence’, each incorporating advanced acoustic materials and timber that gives a warm retro look. The aesthetic works well with the intent behind the range: to provide a soothing antidote to office din, and a space of peaceful respite.

Dauphin – Lordo Flex

With elastic mesh fabric and a patented mechanism for flexibility of movement, Lordo Flex was designed to provide optimum and even support for the back during daily work. The backrest can be height adjusted by 10cm, which allows the chair to easily cater to a variety of body sizes. Once the Dauphin Syncro-Dynamic Advanced mechanism has been set to the user’s individual body weight, the chair automatically ensures a balanced posture.

Tecno – Clavis

Tecno’s stand, designed by Piero Lissoni, presented the ‘io.T’ (‘Intelligence of Tecno’) concept for smart furniture. The concept allows furnishings to recognise their users, to dialogue with computer networks, devices and hubs, and simultaneously acquire information to enhance the well-being of the person and overall building management. The new Clavis table system can be integrated with io.T intelligence, but it also demonstrates smart simplicity. A patented joint and a limited set of components permits immediate tool-free assembly, and the table can be easily adjusted to sit-stand format too.

Vitra – Pacific Chair
Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, 2016

This, Barber & Osgerby’s very first office chair, is an impressive mix of performance and understated, quiet design. The design has a particular clarity and precision; the height-adjustable backrest extends so far down that no mechanical components are visible from behind, with the exception of the base. Explains Edward Barber, “To us the contemporary work chair has become a contraption – a collection of controls and levers. Rethinking how to minimise the visual impact of these elements has been at the centre of our design.” The synchronised mechanism automatically responds to the weight of the sitter, and fine adjustments can be made with the concealed but intuitively positioned operating elements.
