Although you’ll have encountered shale many times in the built environment, you probably won’t have been aware of it. That’s because fine-grained, layered shale is typically used as an ingredient of other materials – chiefly brick and terracotta.

Being a laminated sedimentary rock, shale has a rich texture and beautifully dense colour, but it’s prone to breaking apart. That’s why Italian ceramics manufacturer Italgraniti Group has translated the stone’s character into a durable – and visually rich – porcelain stoneware tile collection. And it’s available exclusively from Hafary in Singapore.
The Shale collection of tiles captures the natural essence of slate with an authentic visual portrayal of the stone’s unique qualities. The delicate characteristics of split stone are expressed with graphic dynamism in smooth as well as ribbed surfaces that give a sense of the ever-changing status of the natural material’s surface. Tones such as dark Ash, mid-toned Greige and pale Moon are expressed with variations in shade and veining for an ultimately natural appearance.
Suitable for floors and walls, both indoors and out, the Shale collection creates surfaces that unite consistency of colour and design expression with a subtle expression of natural variation. But unlike the natural material, Shale tiles are resistant to wear and tear from foot traffic, as well as stains and chemicals, and are suitable for use in contexts ranging from homes to restaurants, shops, airports, offices and all manner of commercial and public spaces. And in that way, Shale is even better than nature intended.
