Kenny Hong was winner of Launch Pad Asia 2015 with Sheep, a mirror with smart and functional accessories. The designer tells us what he’s been busy with since then.
28 March, 2017
What was your situation when you won Launch Pad Asia 2015?
I had just started my own design firm 11H.
What’s been happening for you since then?
I worked with a few manufacturers, designing tabletop accessories and office furniture, and did a Lighting Art Installation in collaboration with A Star for iLight Marina Bay. On our own we are developing some home furniture to sell direct to homeowners and interior designers.
Did you develop your product The Sheep further after Launch Pad Asia?
The product was ready to sell during Launch Pad Asia. Since Launch Pad Asia, I have brought the cost of the product down by selling the product with a normal smoke grey mirror instead of the one-way mirror, and am now offering a wall mounted model.
What was your most valuable take-away from Launch Pad Asia?
Just believe that it is possible and take that step of faith to do it. It is a good platform to meet people in the industry and the competition provides mentorship to help you with your design.
Tell us about what you’re busy with now, career wise.
We are working on a range of teak wood furniture for the study area (for a manufacturer), preparing an office panel system for the Neocon show in Chicago, doing some product brochures for a client and on our own we are designing a collection of furniture to sell.
In your opinion, what are the most important things young designers should keep in mind today?
Be open to new ideas, stay humble and be thankful that we are given the opportunity to do the things we love.
