Wendy Chua’s curiosity for sensorial material exploration is rooted in the childhood memory of observing her mother, a seamstress, at work. Today, she is drawn to the workshop where she listens to the stories of the woodworker, metalsmith or glassblower.

Chua’s work encompasses research, product and spatial design. From reinterpreting wood joinery in the Black Forest table (manufactured by Ligne Roset) to penning the book The Machinist, she has brought a focus to dwindling crafts through the lens of design.

Chua is well known in Singapore’s design scene as one of the co-founders of international design collective Outofstock. She now splits her time between Singapore and Buenos Aires, where she practices design under the banner of Forest & Whale, a design and research studio founded with fellow Outofstock co-founder Gustavo Maggio.

What are you looking forward to seeing and experiencing during SGID17?

Having meaningful conversations with contemporaries based both locally and overseas.

What did you enjoy the most at past SGID editions?

Installations that added a touch of magic to the usual design showrooms and the keynote speech by Nipa Doshi.
