With a double win so far at the international awards in Singapore, rising Hong Kong designer Joyce Wang is quickly cementing her name on the global design scene.
2 October, 2014
Joyce Wang got everyone talking when her AMMO restaurant project opened a few years ago (see story here). And the designer has not been resting on her laurels. Notable project after project have made her a household name in Hong Kong. And with her double win at the ongoing INSIDE – World Festival of Interiors in Singapore, she’s fast gaining recognition beyond local shores.
Win 1: Xintiandi Penthouse (Residential category)
Joyce Wang’s Xintiandi Penthouse is a three-storey apartment featuring a prominent cantilevered staircase that defines the centre of the home. Located in the heart of the Shanghai Xintiandi district, the design reflects the warehouses of the region with a ‘beautifully crafted industrial aesthetic’, said the judges. The layout of the home consists of a series of free-flowing spaces that seamlessly interconnect with each other while remaining unique.
Win 2: MOTT32 (Bar and Restaurant category)
This facility once held family heirlooms in Hong Kong. Now a restaurant, MOTT32 (see story here) combines industrial New York aesthetic with classical Chinese dĂ©cor, using forgotten memorabilia, colonial-style furnishings and Chinese propaganda to complete the design. The judges commended the project for its ‘ingenious use of materials’ and its ‘excellent layout despite no access to natural light.’
MOTT32 overcame stiff competition such as the new Christopher’s Restaurant in London and the redevelopment of the famous Bar Riviera in SĂŁo Paulo to claim the category award.
