March 21st, 2017
Are you a young designer with a great product concept, but not sure how to develop it for market? In need of some seasoned advice? If there’s anything an innovative young designer needs, it’s support, nurturing and opportunity. The Launch Pad programme provides just that.
This important design initiative was created by Indesign Media in Australia back in 2004. A decade later, it expanded to Asia, with Launch Pad Asia held in Singapore in 2014 and Hong Kong in 2015. It’s back in 2017 together with the INDE. Awards, and entries are closing soon!
Launch Pad Asia promotes the support and development of product design in Asia through a unique, interactive programme of events. More than a design competition for emerging designers, Launch Pad nurtures talent by bringing them onto a region-wide stage and offering career guidance from established industry figures. Winners of Launch Pad go on to be mentored by a judge of their choosing following the competition.
Mentoring sessions offer valuable insights into a range of essential topics, from how to develop your creative business, to marketing your brand and products, finding retailers, connecting with manufacturers and more.
What sorts of products have won Launch Pad Asia in the past? In Singapore in 2014, an unconventional torch titled SPOT (designed by Nigel Geh and Gloria Ngiam) shared the prize with a desk lamp titled Light (designed by Haikal Aziz). SPOT combines the mobility of conventional torches with the strength of industrial work lights and the rotational ability of theatre lights in one compact package. Light uses copper cut-offs and repurposes them to create a minimalist desk lamp.
In Hong Kong in 2015, the prize was shared by Kenny Hong with Sheep (a full-length one-way mirror featuring customisable 3D printed parts), and Aaron Lim with Mirage (a lamp that reflects water patterns on surfaces).
Don’t miss your chance for this unique opportunity for mentoring and exposure. Head to the Launch Pad Asia site to see how to enter and join the ranks of more than a decade of Launch Pad winners!
