Neighbouring the Central district and situated on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island, Wan Chai will be one of the three design precincts to feature in Hong Kong Indesign: The Event, November 30, 2013.
August 27th, 2013
Design and creative scene
The Wan Chai area has become increasingly popular among up-and-coming designers who wish to showcase their talent out of boutique street-level showrooms, with new and unique outlets opening each week.
In particular, Wan Chai’s Star Street is a popular gathering ground for designers and creatives, not only because this is where one will find the large-scale home lifestyle showroom ViA, but also because it has many upmarket delis and cafes lining its street. Urban homeware store Monocle also populates the block, attracting shoppers with its hip in-store cafe and independent fashion display range.
As you move toward the centre of Wan Chai (Hennessy and Lockhart Road), you will notice a huge offering of sanitary and construction brands – bathroom interior stores dominate the area and are broken up by large-scale, up-market showrooms such as Colourliving, which houses a range of exclusive brands such as Armani Roca, Alessi, Biszet and Gessi.
Lifestyle scene
Regarded as one of the busiest commercial areas in Hong Kong, Wan Chai owns the title of the first district to be developed upon the Island and unlike neighbouring areas, still maintains a strong essence of local heritage and culture.
Although Wan Chai boasts a large cluster of modern, towering urban developments, the district is known as a shopping haven with hundreds of retailers scoring street front real estate. You won’t struggle to find your way around this little thriving metropolis with home and design stores congregating within the same four-block radius.
