The Grand Award recipient at this year’s Furniture Design Award in Singapore has launched his own label, a balcony.
30 March, 2011
March was quite a month for Jerry Low. Apart from receiving the grand prize (designer’s category) at the Furniture Design Award for his Wind Screen/Shelf for Air Division, he also debuted his new label, a balcony, at the International Furniture Fair Singapore.
The designer is already a familiar name in the local design scene, having bagged several awards including the Gold at the 2007 Furniture Design Award, and the Red Dot Design Award 2010 for the Liner Sofa, also for Air.

Jerry, who will be moving on as a designer for Air Division to focus on his label, sees it as a natural progression. “I wanted to explore more opportunities and collaboration to further learn, improve and gain more experience,” he says.

The 39-year-old is calling his label “a balcony” to recall his wonderful growing up years in his family home, which had a 3.5m by 3.5m balcony.
Jerry’s small, initial collection communicates a sense of comfort and nostalgia – as with his Day 1, a tribute Robin Day’s 1960s polypropylene chair. Jerry’s Day 1 combines the original shell with a new base, and comes with a hook to hold a bag.

“The approach to the collection is to have balance, be it in form, function, material used or the design execution. I hope to engage a new approach to the label, not a continuation nor a progression from my current work,” says Jerry.

He adds that the response at the fair has been quite encouraging, and he is looking to pick up on what he has learnt to continue building a balcony’s identity and grow the collection.
