Hatched Number 2

The success of the first Hatched in Singapore has spawned a second, also designed by Outofstock.

Baked, boiled, fried, poached or scrambled, Hatched, which opened in 2009 at Evans Road, has been drawing a crowd keen to embrace the idea of an all-day breakfast and an egg-inspired menu in a homey and welcoming space that is, as described by design studio Outofstock, ‘reminiscent of a farmhouse’ (a chic, modern version, we say).

The success of the first Hatched has birthed a second, located in a 2-storey shophouse in Holland Village. Gustavo Maggio of Outofstock explains that the design retains some of the original ideas of the first, such as the farmhouse aesthetic and natural materials, but incorporates new elements.

Hatched

“We wanted to create a space that could provide an interesting dining experience, something unique in terms of concept, visual language and with a strong focus on furniture and light fixtures,” says Maggio.

Hatched

“Of all the areas, we spent a good amount of time designing the facade. We wanted something conceptually strong and very connected to the idea of Hatched and farm. So we came up with a nest-like pattern that we implemented with yellow rope, to give a soft feeling and strong visual effect.”

All the furniture, apart from the chairs from Hay, are by Outofstock, including the Biscuit stools and tables, and the Naked chair, which won the Furniture Design Award in Singapore in 2010. Maggio says being innovative while keeping some traces of an existing design concept was an interesting challenge.

Hatched

“It was a project that demanded high seating capacity but as furniture designers, we saw the challenge as an opportunity to create different experiences through various seating elements.”
