The Enduring Versatility of Flexform’s Sofa Range

Flexform has transformed the simple pleasure of coming home into an art form with its sofa collections. Elegant, impeccably made and understated yet luxurious, they play a role of s generous host that welcomes you home like no other. The activities in our living space may have evolved over time; still a Flexform sofa would accommodate them with ease, a testament to the timelessness of its design.

Brothers Agostino, Romeo and Pietro Galimberti established Flexform in Italy’s famed furniture district of Brianza in 1959. Today the brand is hailed as one of the pioneering brands of modern Italian design. It is celebrated for products designed by some of the most prominent names in Italian design, most notably Antonio Citterio.

Spanning over 40 years, Flexform and Citterio’s collaboration has yielded key products that have played various pivotal roles in the brand’s evolution. One of them is the Groundpiece sofa.

Designed in 2001, it features a revolutionary proportion that changed the way we sit lounge. Groundpiece pairs low seat height and generous depth with voluminous cushions that serve as backrests and smaller cushions for added comfort. A chaise longue module and leather-clad storage units are available to create a personalised island of comfort.

“It changes the way we sit on the sofa. No more rigid posture, we sit more informally, more relaxed,” said Pietro Galimberti during our interview at Flexform Singapore last year.

Groundpiece remains a classic and a bestseller. Citterio has since designed a series of modular sofa families that have been reinforcing Flexform’s legacy of versatility and effortless elegance.

Launched in 2006, the Lifesteel collection features dainty steel structure and squared armrest and backrest that form a comfortable perimeter to lounge about and interact with the surrounding.

The back part of the sofa is often overlooked. Launched in 2008, the Cestone collection highlights the back and the side parts with woven leather, adding an elegant texture to the material palette.

The year 2010’s Soft Dream collection makes good on its name with voluminous yet airy cushions arranged lightly on a thin, leather-clad metal tray supported by Y-shaped legs – perfect for lounging and daydreaming.

Launched in 2012, the Evergeen collection addresses the shift in our activities in the living room even more strongly with a design that is, quite literally, more open to the surroundings. The armrests are separate from the backrest, tapering out to form slim openings at the corner. The collection includes a slew of coffee tables and side tables that, thanks to their Y-shaped metal legs, can be easily paired with the sofa modules to form a cosy working or studying nook.

The latest in Flexform legacy of versatility and effortless elegance is Adda. Launched in 2017, Adda is a playful tribute to the way we nestle ourselves amongst the cushions. Both its backrest and armrest are articulated with horizontal stitching that produces an effect akin to the folds created on soft cushions by the act of sitting – providing both comfort and inviting familiarity.

These collections were recently on display at the IMM Cologne 2018, arranged in a  garden-like setting that expresses Flexform’s ‘home at last’ concept. View the presentation in the gallery below.
