Nau reimagines the club sofa

The traditional club chair and lounge have always been a staple of contemporary furniture. Frequenting local venues and contemporary houses, they’re a nostalgic piece that everyone’s sat themselves upon at some point.

When a furniture icon gets reinvented, there’s always certain rules you must adhere to. Comfort can’t be compromised. The characteristics and look of the chair can be altered, but it must remain true to its predecessor. Nau’s Fat Tulip range, designed by Australian furniture designer Adam Goodrum, is an incredibly comfortable and modern take on the classic club chair. Available now via Cult Design Asia, the Fat Tulip is a showpiece for any room or project.

The chairs recently featured as a design flourish for Ministry of Design’s Citibank Singapore project. Asked by Citibank to reinvent the atypical interiors associated with financial institutions, the Singapore-based practice set about creating a “cultured conservatory”, and enlisted the help of the Fat Tulip. Sitting amongst a biophilic setting, the three seater sofa added to the comfortability and tranquility of the space. &Tradition’s Fly Table and and GUBI’s Beetle Meeting Chair and Multi-Lite Pendant are also featured in the space.

Upon viewing any member of the Fat Tulip collection, which includes an armchair and 2/3 seater options, the strong intersecting curves create immediate graphic interest. Spectacularly comfortable, the cushions are made of engineered foam for stability and comfort, and sit firmly on low-profile timber legs.

Goodrum’s design is no-fuss, understanding that no further embellishment of the traditional design is required. A firm believer that every environment is defined by the objects within it, Goodrum designs with the philosophy that an object must therefore justify its existence through its story and detailing. His designs celebrate process and craftsmanship and accentuate components and joinery to create functional pieces with spirit and personality. Awarded with a host of design accolades and commissioned to design pieces for several global luxury brands including Veuve Clicquot, Alessi and Cappellini, Goodrum’s work is of the highest quality.
