Chua’s curiosity for sensorial material exploration is rooted in the childhood memory of observing her mother, a seamstress, at work. From reinterpreting wood joinery in the Black Forest table to penning the book The Machinist, she has brought a focus to dwindling crafts through the lens of design. This imbues meaning to her practice – Forest & Whale – and her role as a design educator. Currently based in Singapore and Buenos Aires, Chua’s work encompasses research, product and spatial design.
Tan’s award-winning design practice works across the borders of craft, culture and technology. Exploring new ways to interpret luxury and break archetypes, the studio works on design, curation and creative direction for local and international clients such as The Warehouse Hotel, Ariake and Ishinomaki Laboratory. Tan has also served as a jury member at the Cannes Lion International Festival of Creativity and is the co-founder of global design collective Outofstock.
