The Glasgow School of Art Singapore hosts its fourth degree show at SOTA, showcasing diverse interior design and communication design projects from 114 students.
June 21st, 2017
A broad range of subjects is covered in the projects currently being showcased by the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) Singapore – from examining cultures both local and foreign, to rethinking and questioning the way we live today and reimagining the future.
Addressing issues of Singapore’s ageing population and food scarcity, the FORES-ITY project by Maggie Ng reimagines a defunct school building as a multi-generational care centre and urban farm. Aiming to find joy in the mundane, Chua Rui Min recreates the notion of cloud-gazing indoors with simple modules made of plastic bags in the Moving Clouds installation.
In Unsighted: A Project for the Visually Impaired, Aidil Zainal explores the ways in which spatial design can be appreciated with non-visual senses, while the Framed Journey project by Tan Yong Ru explores an idea similar to a food festival. It was designed to carry multi-sensorial qualities that include smelling and hearing.
Celebrating Singapore’s multiculturalism, the Sacred Within the Profane project by Farzan Aziz proposes an inclusive contemplation space for prayer of all faiths. The Third Teacher project by Lim Kar Wang rethinks children’s educational spaces by letting children explore and construct based on their experiences. Implicit is the suggestion that early childhood education in Singapore is ready to embrace the individuality and creativity of children.
The Incense Letter book by Joel Tan documents the declining practice of spirit mediums by taking a close look at one such practice still conducted in a temple in modern-day Singapore. Wong Jun Yi’s makingplaces.sg creates an engaging platform for Singaporeans to share their journeys and impressions of their neighbourhood, in the hopes of building a sense of belonging.
A publication featuring original counterculture artworks, Vol.1: What’s Wrong With Black Sheep? by Abdul Rahman aims to encourage one to take courage in one’s ideas. Rahman has been selected to join UPSTARTS – a 12-month graduate placement programme designed by the Institute of Advertising Singapore (IAS) in conjunction with Economic Development Board (EDB).
Glasgow School of Arts Degree Show runs until 23 June 2017 at the School of the Arts (SOTA) Gallery. Admission is free.
