To be shown at A Design Film Festival Singapore 2015, Naoshima shows how contemporary art is impacting the landscape and cultural traditions in this small island of Japan.
August 12th, 2015
Making its Asia premiere at the upcoming A Design Film Festival Singapore 2015, Naoshima (Dream on the Tongue) takes viewers on a journey through a contemplative dreamscape, triggering questions on our concepts of beauty and art.
Directed by Claire Laborey, the hour-long film offers unique insights into the changes that are taking place in Naoshima, the island of ‘mists and trances’, as a result of a stunning contemporary art sponsoring project.
With three museums designed by Tadao Ando and on-site contemporary artworks blending into the landscape, the presence of art has become the beating heart of this small island. While this is at once fascinating and inspiring, the film also shows how this can be worrying and unsettling as the island’s inhabitants witness an upheaval of changes threatening local primitive art and deeply rooted traditions.
Visions du Reel calls it “8 km2 of a utopia as told by its inhabitants” while Fiches du Cinéma describes it as “(An) ode to these creations on the border between dreams and reality”.
A Design Film Festival will be held at the newly reopened Capitol Theatre (5 and 6 September) and Shaw Theatres LIDO (11, 12 and 13 September). For more information and tickets, go to http://designfilmfestival.com/2015/
