Designed by Panorama, the new 200-room Skytel boutique hotel straddles the realms of hospitality and art, a savvy strategy perhaps, given the expanding art market in Chengdu.

Drawing inspiration from the hotel’s name, the designers have created abstracted landscapes of sky, mountain and earth within the different interior zones.

The entrance lobby is draped in white to mimic an art gallery, with silk-screened texts providing the transition from the hustle and bustle outside into a serene hospitality space within.

The lobby area also houses a 240sqm multifunctional space to cater for art exhibitions and auctions, as well as a host of events. Here one will find a temporary cloud-like art installation with subtle interactive projection. Other artworks worth noting include a custom designed metal wall relief in the reception, which offers a bird’s eye view of Chengdu’s future cityscape, and a black and white photo-collage wall of life in the city by famous local visual artist Qi Hong.

Reception and waiting areas offer casual living room settings. And while white is the predominant colour in this hotel, brown tones can also be found in the lobby lounge, where tree-like timber screens and river-inspired copper curtains give privacy and soundproofing qualities to the space.
