Learn Something New At Design Conversations

Singapore Indesign’s famed panel series, Design Conversations, returns with a full day lineup of best-in-category designers and thought leaders.

Singapore Indesign’s famed panel series, Design Conversations, returns with a full day lineup of best-in-category designers and thought leaders.

When Design Conversations made its debut as part of Singapore Indesign Intimate last year, it garnered tremendous interest and support from the design community, setting a record with maximum attendance.

This year, we are bringing it up a notch by hitting the showroom circuit with all-day programming across multiple inspiring venues. Expect to hear first-hand insights from local and regional game changers from across diverse sectors. The best-in-category designers and thought leaders will take the stage and discuss the latest ideas, directions, trends and opportunities in design.

This is a rare chance to tap into the latest thinking and learn something new. The first lineup of speakers has just landed. Start planning your schedule for 8 October 2016, Saturday to not miss out on any of the sessions below!

The Collaborative Future of the Workplace
11:00am – 11:45am at Schiavello

Collaborative work practices are on the increase and evolving with exciting developments in technology. But successful collaboration at work requires much more than the simple provision of a meeting space. What is the optimal size for a collaboration space? How many of these spaces does a company need? And what sorts of furniture and technology settings are most beneficial for collaborative exchange – be it in person or remote?

Speakers:
Philip Hannaford, Director, Realys
Nick McMicking, Chief Representative Asia Pacific, BENE GmbH
Rhian Windridge, Director Project Management APAC, CBRE @ Google Account
Neil Salton, Managing Director, ChangeWorq (Moderator)

Lighting Today and Tomorrow
12:30pm – 1:15pm at Kreon

As advancements continue to be made in digital and material technologies, a great amount of potential opens up in terms of how we might interact with lighting, and how lighting might interact with space and architectural form. But before we fully grasp those opportunities, it is worth reflecting on how we currently design and respond to lighting environments, and how we might capitalise on the almost subconscious responses that we have to light.

Speakers:
Simon Berry, Partner, Illuminate Lighting Design
Yusuke Hattori, Associate Director, Lighting Planners Associates
Melvyn Law, Director, Limelight Atelier
Kevin Sturrock, Director, DP Lighting
Narelle Yabuka, Editor, Cubes Indesign (Moderator)

The Hospitality Matrix
2:00pm – 2:45pm at Space Furniture

‘Experience’ is the buzzword of the hospitality sector, and it’s rapidly gaining currency in other sectors too. In the workplace, for example, where social spaces and mobile work practices are becoming more prominent, greater attention is being paid to the identity and character of the interior. This session will discuss what’s behind the infiltration of hospitality thinking into the workplace, and what effect it’s having.

Speakers:
Patricia Ho, Design Director and Founder, White Jacket
Natalie Louey, Global Hospitality Sector Leader, Geyer
Matthew Shang, Principal, HASSELL
Narelle Yabuka, Editor, Cubes Indesign (Moderator)

What is Southeast Asian Design?
3:30pm – 4:15pm at Curated Space at Theatreworks 72-13

What is Southeast Asian design, and can or should it be defined? This session will discuss the opportunities and challenges being faced and overcome by some of Southeast Asia’s leading furniture/product designers – in terms of identity and meaning, manufacturing capabilities, supply chain and connection to markets. They will share their thoughts on how and why design has evolved in this region, from traditional or vernacular forms to present-day directions.

Speakers:
Abie Abdillah, Director, Studiohiji
Olivia Lee, Designer
Hunn Wai, Creative Director and Founder (with Francesca Lanzavecchia), Lanzavecchia + Wai Design Studio
Nathan Yong, Founder and Director, Nathan Yong Design / Grafunkt / FOLKS Furniture

Future-Proofing our City for Senior Living
4:30pm–5:15pm at Curated Space at Theatreworks 72-13

Ageing is a multi-faceted issue that touches on many areas – health (physical and mental) and healthcare, social and familial interaction, architecture and design, and financial and economic factors. How well are architects and designers able to respond to this diverse set of considerations when conceptualising and implementing age-sensitive environments? As the needs and desires of seniors evolve, how can our built environment keep up with the demands placed on it?

Speakers:
Dr Chong Keng Hua, Partner, COLOURS: Collectively Ours, Assistant Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design, SUTD
Joshua Comaroff, Design Consultant, Lekker Architects
Kang Fong Ing, Partner, COLOURS: Collectively Ours, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Architecture and Sustainable Design, SUTD
