Wallpapers and fabrics by Glasgow-based Timorous Beasties take beauty to the edge.
June 1st, 2012
Spectacular, experimental, beautiful, rebellious, political and Scottish – all these go into describing Timorous Beasties’ wallpapers and fabrics.
In the often ‘twee’ world of textiles, Timorous Beasties stands out as the provocative cousin with its sense of irony. Expect heavily illustrative designs featuring iguanas, ‘triffid’-like pineapples, birds, bees and butterflies, and even a satirical take on Toile de Jouy where ‘society’ and ‘politics’ are common themes of choice.
The cities of Glasgow and London are also frequently portrayed as magnificent cityscapes, but on closer scrutiny, one will discover revealing aspects of contemporary everyday life such as kids on bicycles prostitutes and a smattering of drunks.
While many of the designs push the envelope, the catalogue also includes more conventional pieces showing patterns such as spring blossoms and bamboo, which go well in most spaces.
Timorous Beasties is also known for their bespoke service, from custom colours to original artwork. All designs are created in their Glasgow studio and many are hand-printed.
Timorous Beasties is now available in Singapore at BODE.
