This legume-shaped nursery in Japan gently invites its young occupants to explore the many facets of nature.

Peanuts is a nursery for zero to one-year-old babies in Fukuyama, a city in Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture.
The one-storey building, designed by UID architects, resembles a peanut and is built entirely with timber.
Inside, the 120sqm nursery is one open space and gently connects to the outdoors; semi-outdoor ’gallery’ areas have been carved out for rest, relaxation and exploration, while perimetrical horizontal louvers and semi-triangular vertical panels offer shading.
Administrative and functional areas including the formula room, bathroom and office are carefully zoned off.
The architects have also seen to other thoughtful details: the desk height in the administration room is the same height as the floor in the babies’ room, thus ensuring that caregivers have a good line of sight of their little charges.
The architects’ intention was to create a calm and nurturing environment where babies can enjoy all aspects of nature from the fragrance of the season to the warmth of the sun and the sound of the rain. In this, Peanuts appears to have met its objectives.
