A floating garden of table-like surfaces brought a sense of wonder to the IDS design fair in Canada.

Japanese design studio Nendo collaborated with Caesarstone to create a dreamy installation at Toronto’s Interior Design Show (IDS) in late January 2013.
Titled ‘Stone Garden’, the installation comprised of a large cluster of table-like objects that were made using Caesarstone’s quartz surface materials.
Each ‘table top’ was supported by a single metal-rod stem. With no self-stabilising base component, each table relied upon the overlap of its neighbours for support. No fasteners were used to hold the field of tables in place.
“The installation explores the boundary between ‘furniture’ and ‘non-furniture’,” says Oki Sato, founder and chief designer of Nendo.
“Tables that aren’t quite tables form a cluster, creating a new kind of ground surface like a garden floating in the universe, far beyond the scale of individual tables,” he explains.
The composition, he suggests, is “like the stylised landscape of a Japanese rock garden.”
The Interior Design Show was held at Toronto’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre from 24 to 27 January 2013.
