At last week’s IMM fair in Cologne, Kvadrat launched upholstery fabric Pause 4, which offers a veritable explosion of colour.

Pause 4 offers colour updates to Kvadrat’s versatile 100-per-cent cotton upholstery textile Pause, which was designed by Satu Montanari of Finland.
The comprehensive new palette is described by Kvadrat as a “colour explosion”. It contains 16 strong new tones with 27 original Pause hues to provide enhanced options.
The palette covers the entire spectrum and includes colours with very different characters, such as bold highlight tones, neutral shades and natural notes. Montanari’s goal was to explore the power of colour to shape mood, as well as the relationship between colours and words.
She began designing the Pause 4 palette by creating tones that – either on their own or in combination – evoked memories or aroused feelings. Later, she matched each colour with an energy-charged word derived from a youth magazine – for example, ‘rhythm’ or ‘hot’.
Said Montanari, “Some colours really are able to change one’s mood. Others are associated with memories and create very specific feelings. Likewise, some words capture the feelings you get when looking at a specific tone. In doing so, they spark a mental process which leads to a deeper engagement with the shade in question.”
Pause 4 is constructed with a rep weave (a warp-faced weave) and displays a precise structure. Its matte yet slightly shiny look is the result of the use of mercerised cotton for its production. Mercerisation alters the chemical structure of the cotton fibre, making it stronger, and gives it a lustrous appearance.
The fabric is also given a dirt repellent treatment for easier maintenance.
