Foundry is busy this year presenting its latest collection at major trade fairs, including the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan and the upcoming Saturday in Design in Singapore! Indesignlive Asia catches up with its founder, Felix Low, to find out more.

What is the objective of Foundry?

Foundry, since its onset, was about exploring craft and innovation in today’s context. The meld of old and new, creating pieces that would endure the passages of time. This has seen the launch of the 2010 collection and the response so far has been very positive. We hope to build on this momentum and continue to explore different areas in its original context – new materials, methods and product types.

Tell us about your 2011 collection.

The new collection is an evolution from the 2010 collection. We are also exploring more materials, manufacturing methods and typologies. Specifically, the use of ceramics, cork as well as other methods such as hand forging. These materials and methods are interpreted in a new light and we hope that people will like it!

The 2011 collection will also see some lighting and accessories introduced. So in way, we hope to continue with the Foundry story. Of course, new designers will be presented as well.

What are you showing at this year’s Milan fair? Will it be focused on this collection?

The full 2011 collection will be exhibited in Milan. This is also set against the 2010 collection so that visitors can see the common thread in the development of all products.

And you will also be at Saturday in Design Singapore! Tell us what to expect.

As not all will be present at the trade fairs that we will be exhibiting, we see Saturday in Design Singapore as a great opportunity to present the 2011 collection to the public as well as to the design community here. We are also looking to do an interesting installation, so that hopefully whets the appetite!

What are you most excited to be showing at these events?

I am quite excited (and at the same time nervous) with the showing of the lighting and accessories as it would mean a foray into something quite different. It has been a tremendously long and steep learning curve for all of us involved but hopefully, the products will be well received.

Is there anything else you would like to share?

Well for one, our new website has been launched so that you get to see what goes into each Foundry product! As things are really only beginning, it would be interesting to see how it all develops. Only time will tell!
