Coils of recycled aluminium sheets are used in this 120sqm salon to express the flow of water, the movement of hair, and to create a lighting effect akin to the ever-changing reflection of light on the water surface.

Even the walls are painted silver to mimic the same shimmering effect.

The pattern of aluminium coils and ceiling heights change as one moves from the waiting area to the main salon, allowing small perceived transformation of light to occur gradually, and throughout the day – from bright illumination at daytime to more atmospheric blue and purple hues by night – depending on the viewer’s location and the passage of time. Transient and diverse atmospheres are thus created.

Moriyuki Ochiai Architects have also designed the aluminium ceiling parts to be easily assembled and disassembled, ensuring that this singular feature can re-used should the business relocate, and effectively reducing the costs of moving.
